We have a special note from our good friends at Johnson and Johnson to raise awareness about preventing veteran suicide. Bottom Line Up Front: #BeThere , join the conversation and stay involved!
As we look towards Veterans Day to acknowledge the profound role Veterans and service members play in protecting our country, we must also consider how we can come together as a community to be there for them when they need us most.
The honor that comes with military service, also brings sacrifice that often affects the health and well-being of the brave men and women who serve. Extensive research and studies have brought to light the extent of the mental health challenges that uniquely affect our Veterans and service members, such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). These illnesses often go undetected or untreated, and suicide has become the most devastating consequence of inaction. In the U.S., an average of 20 Veterans a day die from suicide. While this statistic is startling, we must remember that suicide is preventable and each of us has a role to play in ensuring that our Veterans and service members get the help and support they need.
Promoting a productive approach to mental health begins with normalizing the conversation and empowering the public to make meaningful connections with a Veteran or service member. In doing so, we can encourage treatment-seeking behaviors, actionable health goals and a greater awareness of how pervasive mental illness is in our society. That is why the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Johnson & Johnson (J&J) have partnered to create a public service announcement [link], narrated by Tom Hanks, to address the tragic rate of Veteran suicide and mobilize the community to support a hero who may be in crisis. You can join the conversation by using #BeThere on social media and by visiting www.BeThere4Veterans.com for more information on how to reach out and be there for the Veterans and service members in our communities.
