Everyone has heard the statistic that only 15% of jobs are filled by online applicants. That is not an opinion that is a reality. Most of the great opportunities are not found by searching for keywords. The best jobs are not ever even posted online for you to see. These opportunities are filled through the word of mouth. Don't believe me? Well, yes you are right you have to post the job online, but these jobs may already haves someone slotted for the role. Did you know that it is not uncommon to build an entire job description to fit a specific person? Also, Did you know that it is not the person who knows you the best that will make that connection? It is that person that you barely know. That person that you may have shared a passing word or comment that may be the key to your next great adventure.
I know this from experience. Now let’s get past that part. Let me tell you that you can’t leverage your connections if you can’t answer the simple question “so tell me what career do you want to pursue?” I can’t help you if you don’t know what you want to do or you are pursuing the wrong job or maybe a job that doesn’t really exist. Believe it or not, I speak to veterans every single day and that is one question that some just cannot answer. It is so hard to figure out how your experience translates to a good civilian career.
So back to networking that I mentioned before, if you are not sure leverage the people that you know or who know about you to help. Of course, you are transitioning so how can you identify and reach these mentors. There are countless of resources available to veterans to help you connect with others who are more than willing to help. https://www.veterati.com/ is one of my best resources. Veterans are able to connect and schedule calls with over 500+ people in different career fields who want to help answer that tough question. Just as an example, I normally have about a 45-minute conversation to barely scratch the surface on what marketable skills a veteran has.
Why is that? Because it is tough. It is so easy to get caught up in the leadership skill set only. Don’t get me wrong that is so important, but you have to understand the civilian mentality that they want kings and queens with specific skills. What does that mean? You will never see a job asking for a supervisor, or a manager, or a team leader. You will find jobs for transportation managers, recruiters, distribution center managers, network operations center analysts, and so on. So to get started you must know yourself very well and know the market that you want to enter. Be strategic with your search, leverage connections, and be ready to work hard. If you want to be exposed to a one stop shop for everything I mentioned above start using LinkedIn.com You can also connect with me there at https://www.linkedin.com/in/clarkcecilia/ I am constantly blogging, posting ideas, commenting on others posts, and posting jobs.
Do not be scared! Be proud of your military background, but do not let that define who you are because you are so much more than just a veteran. You are a professional in your field. You just have to find out what that field is.
