During my transition out of the Air Force in 2013, I applied to approximately 1,542 jobs online, and I had one interview -- a success rate of .06%

Over the last four years, I have had the distinct privilege of working in the military and veteran hiring space. In that time the landscape has drastically changed, and we now have historically low unemployment rates and scathing competition for the best talent. In one word, the job market is ripe. During my transition out of the Air Force in 2013, I applied to approximately 1,542 jobs online, and I had one interview -- a success rate of .06% -- but when I started networking and leveraging resources, I landed four face-to-face interviews with hiring leaders and had three job offers which was a dramatic increase in success. Thank you, Mom!
While technology has rapidly advanced and the job market has drastically changed, some tried and true methods to a smooth transition remain the same:
Network Ferociously – talk to and connect with corporate recruiters, your military recruiter, your mother-in-law, your ex, your second cousin Eugene, your grandmother’s cat and anyone else that will listen. Tell them that you are looking to move to [insert location] and being [insert profession] is your dream job. You’d be amazed how many people are willing to help or point you in the right direction; the only obstacle is that if people do not know they cannot help.
Leverage Resources – the number of resources can be overwhelming but do not let that stop you from using them. You can create better opportunities by targeting the right resources. Both the public and private sector are scrambling to find the best talent, and they have created dedicated resources and programs to help.
Know Thyself – a couple of philosophical questions to ponder. When you grow up, what do you want to do and where do you want to do it? After that, leverage your resources and network ferociously. Remember, be the best version of yourself and if you have questions on how to do that, revisit points 1 & 2.
In 2018, do not underestimate the power of old-school strategies. Some of my favorites will always be talking to people, asking for help and saying thank you.
