Military Transition Help: A Note From Brian Niswander

Good morning everyone,
My transition from active duty occurred more than 20-years ago when there wasn’t a great deal of information about the process of taking off the uniform and entering the civilian workforce. The year was 1996 and there a handful of books and coaches that offered advice. We didn’t have YouTube channels, websites, podcasts, blogs, digital newsletters, online mentoring tools, job boards, magazines, transition assistance (TAP/SLF), military spouse groups, online communities and countless VSOs dedicated to this purpose. Over the past decade, the environment exploded from a lack of information to an abundance. Despite this level of information, today’s military families continue to battle similar challenges and make the same types of mistakes as those who have gone before them. Research indicates that stress levels and confusion have increased for post 9/11 veterans while transition difficulty surged by more than 20% (link). After studying the transition process for more than a decade, I started Military-Transition.org as my way to address this issue and give back to the military community. Our website provides reliable information and resource to help reduce the level of confusion, stress and difficulty associated with making the military-to-civilian transition.
An important lesson from a decade worth of coaching service members is the amount of confusion that results from information overload, erroneous assumptions and misinformation about post military employment. This led to the creation of a comprehensive transition RESOURCES page where creditable information could be accessed free of charge, anonymously and globally by military members and their families. If there’s a resource you think should be added, please send us an email (contact@military-transition.org) with the link and why you think it should be added.
Another important take-away from our transition research includes the five elements of a successful transition: 1) start preparing early for the transition, 2) have a plan, 3) network, 4) learn to translate your military skills and 5) be patient. Based upon the research and personal experience, I know the transition can be difficult. These steps are the best way to minimize the confusion associated with transitioning into the unknown of the civilian workforce. https://www.military-transition.org/flyer.html
We recently began a new study (survey link) which looks at employment challenges and identifies best practices for hiring and retaining military spouses. Responses to date are informative, but we need additional survey participation to increase confidence in the results. If you’re a current or former military spouse, please take a few minutes to share your thoughts and experience to help others. Like all of our studies, the military spouse employment survey is completely anonymous. Brian NiswanderFounder of Military-Transition.org
