Looking for a career in a new location comes with challenges, but in today’s business environment, finding or continuing a career is much easier

The word “transition” is a common word in the military community, referencing the time when a service member decides to separate or retire from active military service. Military spouses transition along with their loved one; however, before that day comes, a military spouse must “adjust” every time the family moves from duty station to duty station. Military spouses are resilient, dedicated, passionate, hardworking, and tremendous multi taskers. They have had to be the mom and/or dad, the lawn mower, the bill payer, the home maker as well as a volunteer in their community and/or children’s school, and everything in between. Pursuing a career or changing it every three years can either be a strain or an opportunity to put another tool in the tool belt, it’s a choice.
Looking for a career in a new location comes with challenges for sure, but in today’s business environment, finding or continuing a career is much easier than in years past. Employers are seeking the skillset of the military spouse and value the work ethic that comes along with hiring a spouse. Finding that perfect fit starts with identifying military “friendly” and military “ready” companies. Gone are the days when a spouse had to hide the fact that he/she is a military spouse. Thousands of companies are out there ready to make a military spouse a part of their culture.
In my position with USAA, I have the honor and privilege of working with military spouses around the country sharing tips and best practices on how to build their personal brand, how to create a skill based vs. chronological resume that employers understand, and finding the right fit for their employment goals. USAA supports and partners with nationally recognized programs such as The U.S. Chamber Foundations Hiring our Heroes Program https://www.uschamberfoundation.org/hiring-our-heroes, loaded with upcoming hiring events and information needed for every spouse to start or take their career to the next level. To truly prepare for a meaningful career, all spouses should also visit https://mycareerspark.org where they will find tools created specifically for the military spouse, templates for creating the perfect resume and a job finder platform loaded with thousands of military friendly and military ready employers.
Finally, USAA has created a Military Transitioning platform http://usaa.com/militarylife that serves both the Veteran and military spouse. Once on the landing page, you can find checklists, a leaving the military guide along with a job finder tab to help create resumes and find meaningful careers whether you are “transitioning” or just “adjusting”.
