I have a note on AWA from Jim Beamsederfer, Vice President, Veteran's Initiatives, Prudential Financial below. Hear more from Jim, USAA, Microsoft, Toyota, LaQuinta and Hiring Our Heroes in our Episode of the Week.
"In 2015, We had our first spouse move and continue her career with Prudential – working remotely! We now have more than 10 military spouses who work remotely full-time. Our world-class technology infrastructure allows employees to connect to the Prudential network from almost anywhere. And, our robust alternative work arrangement (AWA) program allows employees to alter their traditional work schedule through telecommuting or compressed work weeks, for example. By leveraging existing technology and our AWA program, we can enable military spouses to remain employed with Prudential after their PCS move! Currently we only offer this capability for stateside moves, but we are working on expanding to include overseas moves.
Our goal is to offer military spouses portable careers, and we are “all in” to make this a reality. We recently commissioned a second thought leadership series with IVMF (Institute for Veterans and Military Families), with this one focusing on portable careers for military spouses and providing a playbook for interested companies to follow and implement. Look for the first deliverable in this series over the summer.
Our military spouse employment program is a journey – not a destination. While we are well into this journey, we still have some distance to go. As with all our military hiring programs, we hope to share with and learn from others. The Veterans Initiatives team at Prudential will gladly share our lessons learned and help you and your organization establish a military spouse hiring program."
Here are some resources that can be of great help in this endeavor:
- The Force Behind the Force - U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hiring Our Heroes Military Spouse Program - Hiring Our Heroes Military Spouse Professional Network (with chapters at many military installations)- Department of Defense Military Spouse Employment Partnership - National Military Family Association - Blue Star Families - Episode of the Week!
Please reach out to Jim with any questions you have about Prudential's Veterans and Spouse Initiatives! Or if you are a spouse looking for employment!
And as always you can feel free to reach out to me anytime. Thanks for tuning in!

Is an Alternative Work Arrangement for you?
Working Remotely. A lot of people think its a dream job. There are a lot of pros to it. Working remotely has been a blessing for those of us who have to move frequently with our spouses. The list of companies that are now offering Alternative Work Arrangements (AWA) like USAA and Prudential is growing larger every day. Could working remotely be for you? I will give you more of my perspective next week, but I can tell you as a veteran who is used to being surrounded by the hustle and bustle of hardworking Soldiers getting the job done, it was a big adjustment working in the quiet of a home office.I have a note on AWA from Jim Beamsederfer, Vice President, Veteran's Initiatives, Prudential Financial below.
