HA News48: Settling Down is Hard To Do

I had the grand vision of getting out of the military buying a big ranch house in Texas and putting down some roots for at least 5 years...and here I am 2 years later trying to downsize and find a renter. I probably should have listened to Ingrid Bruin, Joshua Andrews and JJ Montanaro from USAA more on their Tips "To Buy or Not To Buy". I was blinded by the dream I had of what life would be like in the civilian world.
I even waited to have a child until I was out of the military, because I wanted her to have more stability. I didn't take into account that today's job market requires frequent location changes, monthly travel and often both! You CAN find jobs that don't require this, but then you have to narrow your focus and you may have to overlook industries and companies that could potentially be a really good fit for you.
You know what else I realized? I am USED to moving every 2-3 years and it is actually harder to settle down in one spot than I thought. I am not ready to settle in a location, and to tell you the truth, I'm not ready to settle down in my career either. If I need to move locations in order to move forward then I won't hesitate to do that. I still think that one day I will be ready to settle down, but that may be further down the road than both my husband and I anticipated. It may be further down the road than you realize as well, just something to consider before you buy your 3800 square foot forever home.
I just wish myself and all my household goods could be teleported...
Give me your thoughts on moving after the military and PLEASE send any tips for moving with a 19 month old!!
