"You can bring the dream to you. You don't have to create the dream where there are more people. Maybe you create the dream wherever you are"

"Veterans are the Future of Rural America" -Julie Baxter, Pacific Mountain Workforce Development

Hello everyone!
I promised I would talk about what happens when you quit a high paying job to pursue a true passion for photography and videography this week. Let me tell you one thing that happens. You leave a city of 930,000 and move back to rural Southern Virginia to a little town of 3,800 people to live with your in-laws.
Yes my husband Rich, a retired Marine, decided to leave his job in pursuit of his passion and to have more time with our daughter. And you know what? I encouraged it! Rich has never lived in a small town, and I wasn't sure how he would adjust. It turns out he really enjoys it! We both do! We've realized we can really give a lot back to this rural community and maybe try our hand at being entrepreneurs! It is a lot easier (and cheaper) to try your hand at a small business in a small community. They love to rally around and support their veterans!
So...let me talk about the quote from Julie Baxter above. The timing of our BRAND NEW Episode of the Week couldn't be better. It features veterans and spouses who live in rural Washington State and make a big impact on small communities. Emma Welch, Wilderness Therapy Director and Co-Founder of Rites of Passage really hit me with this statement "You can bring the dream to you. You don't have to create the dream where there are more people. Maybe you create the dream wherever you are, and we are here." I get it. And hearing hard hitting quotes like this helped me to confirm our move back to Virginia was the right one.
You will hear about opportunities in US Forestry at the 2:42 mark. You can hear more great inspiration from the co-founders of Rites of Passage, a wilderness camp for at risk youth at the 5:25 mark. This husband and wife team are also getting ready to open up a boutique hotel with a farm to table oyster bar! And of course you have to hear from Steam Donkey Brewing at the 11:20 mark...everyone loves veteran owned breweries right!?!
Please check out a few clips from this episode and if you are a veteran or spouse living in rural america shoot me an email and let me know how you like it!
