"The practice of mutual respect which members of the military demonstrate to each other and to the public at large is of great value at a time when the standards of discourse in our society are being shredded." -Senator Feingold
Hi everyone!
What is one thing that you have learned from working side by side with former military members like John McCain and others in the community, and what kind of impact did this have on you?... This was the question I asked Pam Tarr, the newest amazing member of the Hiring America team, to ask Senator Russ Feingold in the wake of Sen McCain’s passing. Sen Feingold’s entire response was this: “The practice of mutual respect which members of the military demonstrate to each other and to the public at large is of great value at a time when the standards of discourse in our society are being shredded. Senator McCain was a model of this civility: tough when necessary, warm frequently, and respectful to everybody. Our veterans are such good examples to all of us of what appropriate public conduct looks like.”
Mutual Respect. Mutual Respect goes along with knowing how to work as a team with military members from diverse backgrounds. As a transitioning veteran what do I want from my employer? I want an employer that fosters a culture where employees have mutual respect, work as a team and learn to have fun working together to get even the most arduous tasks done. Who and where are these employers???
My search for these employers starts with my good friend Jeff Hall and DAV, Disabled American Veterans. Jeff is the National Employment Director for DAV and works with hundreds of great companies every single week. DAV even recognizes a small, medium and large employer of the year. Jeff told me one of the elements to look for in a good veteran friendly employer is their Veteran Employee Resource Group, ERG. Some of the best ERGs include mentorship programs like the one at FirstData. Or somewhere unique like DAV, to quote Jeff, “Where the entire DAV Organization functions as an ERG!”
I promised I would mention a few team oriented, rewarding employers this week and the first one I would like to mention is DAV. The awesome thing about DAV is you don’t have to be a full time employee (although that would be awesome) you could start with something as simple as volunteering a few hours a week at Volunteer For Veterans. AND if you are a disabled veteran that could use a small (or large) helping hand with some extra tasks to make life a little easier PLEASE sign up at the same website, Volunteer For Veterans. Believe me, I am the WORST at accepting help in any form but I am starting to realize that there are hundreds of people who truly WANT to make a difference so do them a favor, sign up and let them do something as small as bringing in your trashcans every Thursday. Teamwork doesn’t work without a team…right???
More to Follow on my Great Employers Search!
Until next week…
