Know The Target You Are Aiming For

Want to know the most important attribute for landing a job? Being an informed candidate! It sounds simple but I have realized first hand how vitally important it is to understand exactly what type of role and culture you are applying for. Of course you should do your research before hand but I would like to tell you that you have to do more than that. You have to do your research IN the interview. Your FIRST job is to ask the Hiring Manager what they need in their department and what they are looking for. They usually will lay out very clearly what they want. Now you know the target you are aiming for!
If you don't know exactly what the role is you are applying for and what they are looking for then how can you demonstrate those strengths? You would think that it would be laid out in the job description but you would be surpirsed how misleading or vague those descriptions can be. There have been more than a few times that I have missed the mark. Like the time I appliced for a Director of Partnerships position and told amazing stories about how great I am at networking and creating beneficial partnerships only to find out that what they really wanted was a hardcore saleswoman who was going to be ruthless at cold calling. I didn't see that coming because I didn't ask! I have plenty of stories about my saels experience but I didn't get the chance to tell a single one of them. I missed the target.
We all know how important it is to hit a target. We wouldn't have done well in the military if we didn't. I hope this little tidbit of advice can help you hit your targets out of the military too. In an interview, ASK THE HIRING MANAGER WHAT THEY NEED/ARE LOOKING FOR FIRST! Then you can properly aim and nail it!
